Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh expressed his appreciation for the Union Home Ministry’s decision to abolish the Free Movement Regime (FMR) between India and Myanmar.
In a tweet, Singh conveyed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah for their dedication to border security.
He emphasised the significance of scrapping the FMR, citing its importance in preserving internal security and the demographic integrity of North Eastern States.
“Immensely grateful to Hon’ble PM Shri @narendramodi Ji and Hon’ble HM Shri @AmitShah
Ji for their commitment to securing our borders. The decision to scrap the Free Movement Regime (FMR) between India and Myanmar, as recommended by @HMOIndia , is crucial for our internal security and the demographic integrity of our North Eastern States,” Singh tweeted.
Singh also hailed the decision as another milestone in the government’s efforts to tackle illegal immigration and enhance internal security, following the recent announcement to fence the 1643 km Indo-Myanmar border.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced the termination of the Free Movement Regime, emphasising the need to safeguard internal security and maintain India’s border region demographics. The Ministry of Home Affairs promptly recommended the suspension of the FMR in alignment with this objective.
The FMR, which allowed unrestricted movement of people in designated areas along the India-Myanmar border, had raised concerns about security threats and demographic changes. Shah, in line with Prime Minister Modi’s vision, highlighted the move as part of broader strategies to strengthen border security and management.
India and Myanmar share a largely unfenced 1,643 km border, which goes through the states of Manipur, Mizoram, Assam, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh.
