The Haryana government said Wednesday all slaughterhouses in urban areas would remain closed on the occasion of Mahavir Jayanti on March 29. Also, sale of meat, fish and eggs will be restricted in the state.
In a statement, Urban Local Bodies Minister Kavita Jain said Mahavir Jayanti was observed every year as “non-violence day”.
Different religious organisations of the state had met her and demanded prohibition of killing of animals on the day.
“After this, the officers of the department were instructed to prepare a proposal in this regard. Keeping in view the religious sentiments of the Jain community, the proposal to close down slaughterhouses on March 29 and also restrict the sale of meat, fish and eggs has been approved,” she said.
Jain said officers had been instructed to ensure strict compliance of the orders in the municipal areas and also submit a report.
In 2017 too, the Haryana government had observed Mahavir Jayanti as ‘Ahinsha Divas’. Slaughterhouses remained closed in the state, and there was a complete ban on the sale of meat, eggs, fish and liquor.
All deputy commissioners, commissioners of municipal corporations and executive officers and secretaries of municipal councils and committees had been directed to ensure compliance of these instructions in areas under their jurisdiction.
