An earthquake of 4.6 magnitude on the Richter scale was recorded in Hanjiyasar in Kutch district of Gujarat on Thursday. The epicentre of the quake was 8km east-southeast of Bhachau.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the quake hit the region at 4.03 am at a depth of 30 kilometres.
Tremors were felt in Rajkot, Wadhwan and Jamnagar, which are located within 100 km from the epicentre.
Reports suggest that the quake did not cause damage to life or property.
Quakes are not uncommon in Gujarat, which is categorised under Level 5 – the highest level among earthquake prone zones in India.
On 23 January this year, an earthquake of magnitude 3.6 struck Junagadh in Gujarat in the evening.
On 26 January 2001, an earthquake of magnitude 7.7 struck Bhuj killing an estimated 25,000 people in India and Pakistan.
The devastating quake, one of the worst recorded in India’s history, left over 4 lakh people homeless and over 1,50,000 injured.
