Kerala: 15 people fall into sea as floating bridge collapses

n a shocking incident, 15 tourists including children fell into the sea after the railing of Varkala floating bridge in Varkala in Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram district collapsed on Saturday evening.

All those who fell into the sea were rescued and rushed to Varkala Taluk Hospital. Of them, the condition of two is stated to be critical.

Eyewitnesses said the bridge overturned due to the storm and the people on it fell into the sea.

Though all of them were wearing life jackets, they could not swim to the shore due to the strong waves. Lifeguards and security personnel rescued them and brought them back to the shore.

“Those injured were immediately shifted to the Varkala Taluk Hospital. Of them, the condition of two persons is critical,” a police official said.

Tourism Minister PA Mohammed Riyas inaugurated Thiruvananthapuram district’s first floating bridge on December 26, 2023. The Varkala floating bridge is the seventh floating bridge in the state.
