While the former chief ministers Mehbooba Mufti and Omar Abdullah on Monday welcomed the conviction of six of the seven accused in the infamous case of rape-murder of an 8-year girl, the BJP has accused them of giving a communal twist to the verdict of the Pathankot court.
In a tweet soon after the verdict was delivered on Monday morning, Mehbooba said; “Welcome the judgement. High time we stop playing politics over a heinous crime where an 8 year old child was drugged, raped repeatedly & then bludgeoned to death. Hope loopholes in our judicial system are not exploited & culprits get exemplary punishment”.

Omar tweeted; “Amen to that. The guilty deserve the most severe punishment possible under law. And to those politicians who defended the accused, vilified the victim & threatened the legal system no words of condemnation are enough”.

Reacting to the tweets of Mehbooba and Omar on the court’s judgment, state spokesman of BJP, Brigadier Anil Gupta (Retired), said; “Omar and Mehbooba express happiness over the judgment. Every Indian wanted severest of punishment to the accused and justice to the victim. So the judgment is the victory of all Indians. True to their colours, both have begun playing politics with the judgment through barbs at those who supported the rape accused.
“Their barbs smack of communalism as no one ever supported the rape accused but only demanded justice for all. The people are so happy that the evil conspiracy hatched by Mehbooba and other Kashmiri leaders to create a wedge in the centuries-old bonhomie that existed between the local Dogras and the Gujjars has failed. The nation wins.”
