The auspicious day of Karwa Chauth has arrived and married women in north India are celebrating the day by observing a fast, which they will break after puja in the evening following the moonrise.
Married women observe an all-day fast (without food and water) and offer water to the Moon at the end of the day to complete the rituals of Karwa Chauth or Karva Chauth. Post this, the women break their fast.
The festival is celebrated as a symbol of love when women pray for long life of the husband. As per the Hindu lunar calendar, the festival of Karwa Chauth is observed on the fourth day after Purnima (the full moon night), which is the Krishna Paksha Chaturthi, in the month of Kartik.
