In a tragic incident, at least two people were run over by a train and several others sustained injuries near Kalajharia railway station in Jharkhand’s Jamtara.
According to reports, the passengers got off their train after it caught fire and gathered at the railway track. In the meantime, another train crushed them.
Following the incident, a team of police and ambulances were rushed to the spot. While two bodies have been recovered so far, reports claimed the number of casualties could be higher.
Jamtara SDM Anant Kumar said RPF and district police are at the spot and conducting a search and rescue operation. He said the reason for the incident is still being determined.
“Near the Kalajharia railway crossing, the train stopped and some passengers got off and were run over by another local train. Information was received that some people have died. RPF and the district police are conducting a search operation and two bodies have been recovered so far… The reason for the incident is yet to be determined…,” the SDM said.
Meanwhile, Jharkhand Chief Minister Champai Soren said that he was saddened by the train accident and that administration team is carrying out relief and rescue work at the spot.
“Heart is saddened by the sad news of train accident near Kaljharia station of Jamtara. May God grant peace to the departed souls and give strength to the bereaved family to bear this difficult time of grief. The administration team is engaged in relief and rescue work on the spot. I wish speedy recovery to those injured in the accident,” CM Soren said.
