For the first time, the Indian Army will start online registration of women for recruitment as soldiers into the military police from Thursday.
The project was mooted by General Bipin Rawat soon after taking over as Army Chief and given final approval by the Defence Ministry recently.
The official Twitter handle of the office of the Defence Minister tweeted the first advertisement of the historic move.
“Honouring the announcement made by Hon’ble PM on August 15, 2018, on Jan 18, 2019, MoD took the decision to induct women for the first time in PBOR role in Corps of Military Police,” the tweet read.

Army Chief Gen Bipin Rawat had last year said that the Army was considering to induct women as jawans and initially they will be recruited for positions in military police.
“In modern army, strength is not the only factor that counts. The army has changed over the last 70 years and womenfolk are also not the same now. They could be physiologically different from their male counterparts, but that is a non-issue which can be taken care of with training,” he had said.
Prime Minister Narendra had in his Independence speech last year announced permanent commissioning of women officers in the armed forces.
Permanent commissioning allows officers to serve till the age of retirement, while Short Service Commission (SSC) allows tenures ranging from five to 14 years.
Both the Navy and the IAF recruit women pilots under the SSC scheme. The Indian Army recruits women SSC officers in air defence, engineering, signals and services streams.
