Happy Vishu 2019: Vishu is one of the most important festivals of Kerala, and is celebrated with much fanfare by Malayalis living all over the world. Observed on the first day of the Medam month, Vishu signifies the sun’s transition into the first solar month as per the lunisolar calendar.
The traditional Malayalam calendar has Chingam as the first month, while the first day of Medam is considered the astronomical new year. Vishu is a celebration of the spring equinox. Traditional rituals are followed as people pray for prosperity all through the year.
The main Vishu ritual is the Vishukani (the first sight in the morning of the first day of Vishu). It is believed the first object one sees in the morning of Vishu determines the prosperity to be experienced in the coming year.
The Vishukani consists of a ritual arrangement of auspicious articles intended to signify prosperity, including gold, rice, fruits and vegetables, betel leaves, metal mirror, yellow flowers called konna (Cassia fistula), holy texts and coins, all arranged around deities in an ambiance lit by the nilavilakku (traditional lamp). This is arranged by the elders of the family the night before and the younger members in the family are taken blindfolded and they view the Vishukani as the first sight.

Big crowds are seen at all major temples such as the Sabarimala temple, the Guruvayur temple and the Padmanabhaswamy temple. Children burst fire crackers and a grand sadya (feast) is arranged in the noon. Elders give money as gift to youngsters as part of the celebration.
