People in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka are preparing to celebrate the holy festival of Ugadi. It is the traditional new year in Telugu and Kannada societies. In Karnataka, the festival is called Yugadi.

This year, the Hindu holy festival falls on 18 March. The same festival is also celebrated in Maharashtra as Gudi Padwa.

A portmanteau of Sanskrit words ‘Yuga’ and ‘Adi’, Ugadi, or Yugadi, means the beginning of a new age. Many believe that Lord Brahma created the universe on this day, which marks the beginning of the Satyayuga – one of the four yugas as per Hindu mythology.

So how should you greet people on this auspicious day?

Leave the shadows of the past,

Look forward to new beginning,

Realise new aspirations and dreams,

Wishing you an Ugadi filled with happiness and fun!
