Mr Gyanesh Kumar and Dr Sukhbir Singh Sandhu on Friday assumed charge as Election Commissioners in the Election Commission of India.

Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar welcomed the newly-appointed Election Commissioners at Nirvachan Sadan. He emphasised the significance of their joining at this historic point when the ECI is all set to conduct the Lok Sabha elections.

Mr Kumar and Dr Sandhu are officers from the 1988 batch of the Indian Administrative Service, belonging to the Kerala and Uttarakhand cadre respectively.

They were appointed Election Commissioners by a selection panel, headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Congress leader in the Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, who was part of the high-powered panel, dissented on the names put up by the government for the position of Election Commissioners.
