A holiday court on Sunday sent gangster Iqbal Ibrahim Kaskar and two others to judicial custody till 13 October.

On 27 September, the court had extended the police custody of Iqbal Kaskar and his two associates by four days.

Police custody of a fourth accused, betting racket operator Pankaj Gangar, nabbed from Mumbai’s Borivali last Thursday, for allegedly financing Iqbal, has been extended till 5 October.

On 18 September, Kaskar and two of his associates – Israr Jamil Sayyed and Mumtaz Ejaz Shaikh – were picked up for threatening a prominent builder of Thane and for extracting four flats in a posh area and three million in cash from him.

Earlier, police had sought their custody to probe the involvement of absconding mafia don Dawood Ibrahim Kaskar in the extortion racket.

The Thane police’s Anti-Extortion Cell are also on the lookout for some gunmen from Bihar who had threatened the complainant builder on behalf of Iqbal Kaskar, and for the person who had supplied the weapons to them.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has also begun an investigation into extortion and illegal transfer of property by Iqbal Kaskar and three others.

During the probe, Kaskar’s counsel Shyam Keswani has argued that the details of the ongoing investigation were coming out first in the media and most of them are irrelevant to the probe.

He said the alleged visit of Mahejabin Shaikh, wife of Dawood Ibrahim, to India and Dubai, or how the Kaskar family watched together Hindi film “Haseena Parkar”, bore no relevance to the present case. The eponymous movie’s story is based on Dawood sister’s life.
