The ruling Left Front in Kerala has decided to allow private investments in the higher education sector in the state.  The state committee at a recent meeting of the Left Front approved a policy document that highlights the need to start deemed universities.

Held in the presence of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, the meeting approved a proposal to allow private investments in the higher education sector in the state. The meeting has also approved a proposal to start institutions in higher education in the cooperative sector, on private -public- participation model and using private sector investment.

With this, foreign universities and deemed universities may spring up in Kerala. The decision may also pave the way  for  private investment in the higher education sector in the state.

Responding to the development, Opposition leader VD Satheesan said that before implementing reforms in higher education, the CPI-M should apologise to the martyrs of Kuthuparamba police firing and Kerala society. He recounted how as part of the agitation against self-financing  educational institutions, the CPI-M had blocked then co-operation minister MV Raghavan in Kannur and created a riot-like situation that led to police firing.

Therefore, he said the CPM leaders including Pinarayi Vijayan owe an apology to the family of the DYFI workers who were killed in the firing.

They should also apologise to the people of Kerala for their wrong stance against the self-financing colleges.
