A joint team of flying squads and police seized cash worth Rs 2.1 crore during checking from different locations in Meerut, Bulandshahar and Bijnore in the past two days.
Now, the income tax department is examining the legal status of the seized money after which the case would be registered.
During the surprise checking of vehicles, a joint team of the flying squad and Khurja police of district Bulandshahar on Monday recovered Rs 1.06 crore in cash from a Scorpio.
SSP Bulandshahar N Kolanchi said that initial investigation revealed that the money belongs to a cattle trader and the matter has been reported to the income tax department who are examining the legal status of the money. Any action would be initiated only after receiving the report from the IT department, said the SSP.
Also, on Monday, the flying squad and the Kharkhoda police recovered around Rs 7.35 lakh during checking from a car on Hapur road in Meerut. Confirming this, SP Rural Avinash Pandey said that the IT officials have been informed about this recovery and they are investigating the matter. During election time, when the model code of conduct is enforced, one is allowed to carry a maximum amount of Rs 50, 000 in cash, told the SP, adding that any recovery beyond this limit becomes a matter of investigation and police have all rights to seize it.
As per the directions, the police and flying squad are doing surprise checking of vehicles during which the recoveries were made.
In Bijnor, police seized Rs 97 lakh from four-wheelers at two different places. Here also the matter has been reported to the income tax department for further investigation.
