Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president K Sudhakaran on Monday instructed party leaders to desist from indulging in any activities including public comments that affect the cohesion and unity of the party.
In a statement here, K Sudhakaran asked the leaders of Congress to refrain from actions that bring disrespect to the Congress in the public eye. His statement comes in the backdrop of raging controversy over the alleged boycott of Sashi Tharoor’s programmes in Malabar.
Sudhakaran said the controversies around Tharoor’s Malabar tour were media creations and urged the party leaders and workers to be careful in making public statements.
Stating that the Congress is a movement that fully ensures internal democracy, he said that Tharoor has no impediment to participate in official party programmes in consultation with the concerned District Congress Committees.
Responding to Sudhakaran’s direction restricting leaders from making public comments, Sashi Tharoor said in Kozhikode that he is not bothered about the directions.
It has been reported that the Congress leadership has given instructions to the Youth Congress not to conduct programmes where there is the participation of Sashi Tharoor.
The Youth Congress backed out from a seminar titled ‘Sangh Parivar and the challenges faced by Indian secularism’ held in Kozhikode on Sunday. Kannur DCC too backed out from holding a talk on ‘Democracy, Secularism and Politics: Nehruvian Perspective’ on Wednesday at Kannur Chamber Hall.
Responding to these developments, senior Congress leader and Kozhikode MP MK Raghavan on Sunday said that KPCC and the national leadership of the party should conduct an investigation into the Youth Congress and the Kannur District Congress Committee (DCC) backing out from organizing seminars with Tharoor as the main speaker.
