Rejecting media reports on rising crime rate in Rajasthan, Director General of Police Umesh Mishra on Monday pointed out that Uttar Pradesh topped in crime (under IPC offences) and Madhya Pradesh was in fourth position while Rajasthan stood at tenth.

“I do not want to comment on the statements of political leaders on the alleged rise in crime graph in Rajasthan, but as per the latest report of the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB), Rajasthan stands at 10th position in IPC offences after deducting false cases as against Uttar Pradesh which topped the list, and followed by Madhya Pradesh at fourth position.”

The total cases registered under Indian Penal Code (IPC) in the state rose to 1,49,116 in 2023 (till now) from 1,48,231 in 2022, and 1,26,233 in 2021, he said, adding that the jump was just of 0.60 per cent in the last three years.

As against 2022, the cases of atrocities on women were also declined by 0.78 per cent with the total cases being 46,964 till July 2023 against 47,335 cases in 2022, the DGP said.

Similarly, rape cases were declined by 1.49 per cent, and the filing of charge sheet in women atrocities’ cases rose by 3 percent.

As against the national average of 30.19 per cent conviction rate in rape cases, Rajasthan recorded 48 per cent (NCRB 2021), and 42.1 per cent in POCSO cases as against national average of 32.2 per cent, the DGP said.

Between 2019 and 2023, capital punishment was given in 13 cases under the POCSO Act, life imprisonment in 255 cases, 20 years imprisonment in 386 cases, and other kinds of punishments in 936 cases, Mishra pointed out, adding that justice was done in a total of 1,590 cases.

The crimes against SCs/STs, and other cases under IPC, the crime rate has fallen in 2023 (till July) as against last year’s record, he said, adding that due to the proactive and professional approach of the Rajasthan Police, conviction rate was much better than the neighbouring states.

When asked to comment on the alleged wanted accused in Nuh, the DGP said, ” Our team had gone to Nuh. I do not want to blame the Haryana Police. The main issue in this is intelligence. Let me tell you
His (Monu) direct role has not been revealed. But his role in background as conspirator and abetter is still under investigation.
Police is making efforts for that. We can not divulge any information on the role of state police and cooperation between the two. It is a fact that till now his role has not been revealed to us. The rest are criminals. A request has been made to the Haryana Police about them”.
