Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim’s 33-year-old son Jasmeet Insan has been appointed as the executive manager of the sect in absence of his father, who has been sentenced to 20-year jail in a rape case. He will enjoy all the financial and decision-making powers, but Ram Rahim will continue to be the spiritual head of the sect, it is learnt.

Jasmeet’s elevation has come amid speculations that the post will go to someone from outside the family as per the sect’s convention. Two names were making rounds – Ram Rahim’s adopted daughter Honeypreet Insan and the sect’s chairperson Vipassana.

The decision on Jasmeet’s elevation was taken at a 45-member core committee meeting of the dera on Monday, hours after the dera chief was sentenced. Ram Rahim’s mother Naseeb Kaur was present at the meeting and she was the strongest votary for Jasmeet’s case, sources said.

Born in 1984, Jasmeet is married to Congress leader and former minister Harminder Jassi’s daughter, Husanmeet. Jassi has been camping at the dera headquarters in Sirsa to help the family tide over the crisis.

Jasmeet carries a non-controversial image among dera followers and always remained low profile. He has two sisters. His marriage in 2003 was one occasion when he got some limelight.
