A young married couple along with five children allegedly jumped to death in river Narmada at Sanchore town of Rajasthan’s Jalore district on Wednesday morning.
Prima facie it is a case of mass suicide in which the couple, along with their children, including three minor daughters and two sons, drowns in the river, the Superintendent of Police in Jalore district Kiran Kang Sidhu told the Statesman when contacted.
Sharkarram, 32, a farm labourer hailing from Galifa village, and his wife Badli, 30, had marital discord. Last night. Despite relatives’ efforts to dissuade them from indulging in fights frequently they continued to quarrel.
On Tuesday, they left home early this morning, walked straight up to the river side, tied the hands of their five children and jumped into the river, the SP said, quoting villagers.
The children were identified as Ramila, 12, Kegi, 8, Janki 6, and two sons Prakash, 10 and Hitesh, 3.
Bodies of the deceased were fished out from the river in the afternoon by the rescuers and were sent for postmortem. The Chitalwana police station cops recovered the clothes and a mobile phone on the river bank.
Though it appeared to be a case of mass suicide, investigation is underway to ascertain the motive behind the deaths, a senior cop of the police station said.
