Congress on Saturday asked the Centre to provide CISF security and protection to its Punjab MLA Navjot Singh Sidhu owing to his “highly visible profile”.

In a letter written to Union Minister Rajnath Singh, the Congress mentioned that Sidhu has always been a high-risk target as he has carried out campaigns against drug mafia and criminals in Punjab.

The letter further stated that the threats against Sidhu had escalated after he left the Bharatiya Janata Party and joined the Congress.

“Navjot Singh Sidhu has taken on Akali Dal (Badal) and also their anti-people policies, besides exposing the unholy nexus between the Akal Dal (Badal) and certain criminal elements on numerous occasions,” the letter read.

The letter further accused the leaders of Akali Dal and the BJP including party president Amit Shah of threatening Sidhu after leaving the party.

In 2014, the Punjab government withdrew security cover given to Sidhu by removing the four guards attached to him after he launched a virulent attack on the ruling SAD and Badals during his Haryana Assembly polls campaign.

Sidhu had 11 security personnel attached to him when he was MP. After that four security personnel were attached to him.
