The Jammu and Kashmir administration on Wednesday ordered freezing of boundaries of all the administrative units in the Union Territory till completion of the census 2021.

“In exercise of the power conferred by clause (iv) of rule 8 of the Census Rules, 1990 and in supersession of all notification issued in this behalf, the Government of Jammu and Kashmir hereby freezes the boundaries of Districts/Tehsils, Municipalities, Towns, Revenue villages and other Administrative units in the whole Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir  w.e.f 1st July, 2023 till completion of Census 2021,” reads a notification issued by the Planning-Development and Monitoring Department in this regard.

Notably, J&K has 20 districts, 10 each in Jammu and Kashmir valley. The demand for creation of more districts has been surfacing from different places.

The Opposition parties had been demanding shelving of delimitation of the Assembly constituencies till the census was completed. However, the delimitation order had recently come.
