The Delhi Police registered a case under IPC Section 323 (Punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) against the man who slapped Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal during an AAP rally on Saturday.
The man, identified as Suresh, climbed atop an open vehicle carrying the AAP chief and slapped him hard on the face before getting taken down by AAP supporters. The incident was captured on camera.
Kejriwal was at the time campaigning in Moti Nagar area.
Police said that Suresh, 33, runs a spare parts shop in Kailash Park. He was detained on Saturday for questioning at the Moti Nagar police station.
The AAP accused the BJP and Modi government of “sponsoring” the attack.
Pankaj Gupta, AAP National Secretary and Lok Sabha candidate for Chandni Chowk Lok Sabha constituency tweeted: “I strongly condemn the attack on Delhi CM @ArvindKejriwal. He is a democratically elected Chief Minister who deserves all the dignity and security of his office. Why is the ruling party afraid of his popularity among the masses of Delhi?”
