Brijendra Singh, son of veteran Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Brinder Singh and MP from Haryana’s Hisar, on Sunday joined the Congress in the presence of Mallikarjun Kharge, Ajay Maken and others.
Singh joined the Congress party soon after resigning from the primary membership of the BJP. He said that he is resigning due to “compelling political reasons”.
“I have resigned from the primary membership of BJP, due to compelling political reasons. I extend gratitude to the party, National President Sh. JP Nadda, Prime Minister Sh. Narendra Modi, & Sh Amit Shah for giving me the opportunity to serve as the Member of Parliament for Hisar,” he wrote on ‘X’.
Later, speaking to reporters, he said that BJP’s alliance with the JJP was among the reasons for him to quit the party.
“One issue that was raised in the rally in Jind on 2nd October was about the alliance of BJP-JJP in Haryana. A decision was taken regarding it and that too is a reason (for quitting BJP),” Singh said.
The development that comes just weeks ahead of the Lok Sabha elections is seen as a setback back to BJP in Haryana amid anti-incumbency concerns.
Singh, a former Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, is the son of BJP veteran and former union minister Birender Singh and the grandson of Jat icon Chhotu Ram.
According to sources, Birender Singh is also likely to follow his son and join the Congress party soon. In October last year, Birender Singh had given the BJP and ultimatum that he will quit the party if an alliance with Dushyant Chautala’s JJP remained.
