Congress leader Kumari Selja on Tuesday blamed the BJP-led Centre of being responsible for the continuous depreciation of the Indian rupee against the US dollar due to its “wrong” economic policies.
In a statement, the former Union minister said neither Prime Minister Narendra Modi nor any Bharatiya Janta Party member is speaking up about this depreciation.
“The credit for this record depreciation should go to the prime minister and all BJP members,” she said.
Selja alleged it is a matter of shame for the country that due to the central government’s careless financial management and wrong economic policies, the US dollar is now equal to Rs 83.
“This depreciation (of the rupee) is the largest in the country’s history. There is no policy or intention in the Union government to control this trend. That is why since the BJP government came to power in 2014, the rupee has been consistently weakening. It is astonishing that no one in the Ministry of Finance or the country’s economic advisors are saying anything about the matter,” she said.

The Congress leader said the continuous depreciation of rupee will lead to loss of the country’s trade, burdening manufacturing companies and ultimately consumers.
“Prices of mobile phones, which have now become a necessity, will go up. Parents of children studying abroad will have to pay even more fees to colleges and universities,” she said.
Selja, the former Haryana Congress chief, further alleged that although the BJP had shown dreams and gained power at the Centre, no work had been done to fulfill these promises.
“Instead, this government has given rise to unemployment, and inflation to a very high level, and brought the rupee to its record low level. All of it will be in the minds of people when they vote this time,” she added.
