The flood situation in Assam’s Kamrup district worsened after flood waters spread to new places, affecting around 70,000 people.

Following heavy rainfall, the water level of the Borolia river and other significant rivers in the district is rising.

The Borolia river’s floodwaters washed over a piece of an embankment at Choumukha on Thursday, submerging many communities in the Hajo area.

Flood waters have also inundated at least 77 villages in the Kamrup district’s Rangia sub-division, affecting almost 44,000 people.

Many regions in Assam have been hit by the current flood spell, according to Bhabesh Kalita, President of the Assam Pradesh BJP and MLA from the Rangia assembly constituency.

“Following incessant rain, the flood situation has deteriorated and the flood waters have damaged many embankments. A large part of the Rangia sub-division has been inundated by flood waters and many families have become homeless. Two relief camps have been set up in the Rangia town area. I visited the relief camps, and took stock of the flood situation, and relief materials distribution. I appeal to the general public and workers of BJP to stand with the flood-affected people and to extend their help to them,” Bhabesh Kalita said.

Flood waters have flooded many roads and 3226 hectares of crops in the district.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) flood report, the present downpour has affected more than 11.09 lakh people in 25 districts throughout the state. In the last 24 hours, four people have died in the state due to floods and landslides.
