Assam: Two cops suspended for allegedly stripping, torturing 3 sisters, pregnant woman loses baby

Two cops including a woman constable have been suspended for allegedly torturing and stripping three sisters in police custody in Assam’s Darrang district. One of them was as pregnant and lost her baby due to the torture, says the police complaint filed by them.

Sources say that Officer in-charge of Burha police station Mahendra Sarmah and Constable Binita Boro were suspended following a complaint filed by three sisters –Minuwara Begum, Sanuwara and Rumela with Darrang Superintendent of Police on September 11 alleging that they were tortured and stripped by the police in custody on September 6. An inquiry has also been ordered into the allegations.

According to the complaint, the police had detained the three sisters based on a FIR filed by a girl’s family that their brother had eloped with their daughter earlier on September 6. The sisters were beaten brutally on gun point and also allegedly stripped by the police in custody. The woman with whom the brother eloped is from a different religion, police sources added.

They were released by the police the same evening after the boy surrendered with the girl.

The incident came to light when the sisters narrated their ordeal to a local Assamese media.

Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has ordered an inquiry into the incident while the Assam State Commission for Women has also taken up the matter suo moto.
