Soldier killed, 3 injured in shelling by Pakistan

Critically wounded Rifleman Karamjeet Singh succumbed to his injuries

An Indian soldier Karamjeet Singh lost his life and three others were critically injured on Monday when Pakistan troops targeted military positions and civilian areas in the Sunderbani sector of the Rajouri district. The 24-year-old martyred rifleman belonged to Janer village of Moga district in Punjab.

Army spokesman Lt Colonel Devender Anand said Rifleman Karamjeet was critically wounded and later succumbed to his injuries. He is survived by his parents.

Anand said Pakistan troops resorted to unprovoked shelling with mortars and firing of small arms along the Line of Control (LoC) at about 5.30 am.

“The Indian Army is retaliating strongly and effectively,” he added.

The area was rocked with mortar shelling of Pakistan on Sunday too around 6.30 pm. However, no loss of life was reported then. Four civilians, including children and women, have been killed in the last few days due to indiscriminate Pakistan shelling in the civilian areas of Rajouri and Poonch districts.

There has been a spurt in unprovoked shelling by Pakistan after the Indian Air Force carried preemptive air strikes last month on Jaish-e-Mohammad terror training camps in Balakot in Pakistan in response to the Pulwama terror attack in which more than 40 CRPF personnel were killed.
