Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said the ‘Amma’ scooter scheme that provides working women in Tamil Nadu subsidised two-wheelers, will empower the women of the state.

Launched by Modi on the 70th birth anniversary of late Chief Minister J Jayalalitha, under the scheme, the AIADMK government will provide 50 per cent subsidy subject to a maximum of Rs.25,000 for the purchase of scooters by working women.

“I am glad to be able to launch one of her dream projects – the Amma Two Wheeler Scheme. When we empower women in a family, we empower the entire house-hold. When we help with a woman’s education, we ensure that the family is educated,” Modi said.

“When we facilitate her good health,we help keep the family healthy. When we secure her future,we secure future of the entire home,” he added.

Modi further praised the AIADMK’s initiative to plant 70 lakh saplings across the state on the occasion.

“I am told that on Amma’s 70th birth anniversary, 70 lakh plants will be planted across Tamil Nadu. These initiatives will go a long way in the empowerment of women and protection of nature,” he said.

Being considered a masterstroke to woo the people of Tamil Nadu, Modi flew down to Chennai to launch the populous scheme.

On Sunday, he will visit Puducherry and address a public meeting before heading to Surat, Gujarat, for the flagging off of the ‘Run for New India Marathon’.
