Four people, including three drivers, were burnt alive while three others were injured when a LPG gas tanker collided with a stone-laden truck on the NH 58 at Delwara Pulia-Rani Bagh Resort in the Beawar Sadar area of the Ajmer district in the wee hours of Friday.
The deceased were identified as Loom Singh, Sunderlal, Shravan Vishnoi, and Kamlesh (three drivers and one attender), the Superintendent of Police Ajmer Chuna Ram told SNS when contacted.
Of the three injured, a woman with serious burns was rushed to the JLN Hospital in Ajmer, while two others were taken to the Amrit Kaur Hospital in Beawar.
In the accident, five shops were gutted and huge quantity of fodder stored in the houses went up in flames forming a huge fireball at the site of the accident.
A third heavy vehicle, which was following the ill-fated truck and tanker, also caught fire. The driver of the vehicle was among the four killed in the fire. All three vehicles turned into iron skeletons.
Intermittent blast sounds and leaping fire created panic in the 2 km radius of the accident site after the mishap occurred right after midnight last, and people living along the Highway and shops ran seeking help.
So horrific was the accident that the surrounding area spanning 500 meters became a ball of fire, SHO of Beawar Sadar Police station Chaina Ram Bera said recounting the horror.
During the inferno, 15 people were taken out by breaking the lattice of the house. The children and women were scared. Ten fire tenders made 25 rounds to douse the fierce flames that were rising in the sky till early dawn.
In a statement, Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot condoled the death of the four persons and wished speedy recovery to those injured. Gehlot said the benefit of CM Chiranjeevi Accident Insurance Scheme would be made available to the victims.
