A Delhi-bound Air India flight from the Newark airport in New Jersey, carrying around 300 passengers on board, was diverted to Stockholm on Wednesday following an oil leak. The flight had to make an emergency landing at Stockholm airport after detecting technical glitches on Wednesday.

Officials said all the people on board the aircraft are safe.

Following the emergency landing of Flight AAI106, a Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, a large number of fire engines were deployed at the Stockholm airport.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) confirmed that the Air India flight reported an oil leak from the engine. “Air India flight Newark to Delhi flight diverted to Sweden’s Stockholm due to oil leak from aircraft engine,” the DGCA said.

A senior DGCA official said during the ground inspection, oil was seen coming out from the drain mast of engine two and further inspection is in progress.

Earlier on Monday, an Air India flight from New York to Delhi (AI 102) was diverted to London due to a medical emergency onboard. After landing at Heathrow airport, the passenger was rushed to a hospital in London.

“Air India ground staff at Heathrow have been made to evacuate the individual concerned to hospital,” an Air India official told a news agency.

According to the government data, a total 1,090 incidents of technical snags were reported in 2021-22.

Technical snags are experienced during operation of the aircraft. These may be due to improper functioning or malfunctions of systems or equipment or components fitted on the aircraft.

Some of the technical snags may require the flight crew to take actions such as air turn back, aborted take-off, or go around keeping safety of operation in view and are usually taken to avert serious incidents.
