A day after the Indian Army chief General Bipin Rawat visited the forward areas on the Line of Control (LoC) to take stock of the security situation, a soldier was killed on Sunday in the Naushera sector of Rajouri after Pakistan Army initiated unprovoked firing on Indian Army posts.

A spokesman of the Army said that the Pakistan troops resorted to unprovoked shelling on Indian posts in the early hours on Sunday. Indian Army retaliated strongly and effectively.

However, in the exchange of fire, Sepoy Jagsir Singh was grievously injured and succumbed to his injuries.

Sepoy Jagsir Singh, aged 32 years, belonged to Lohgarh Thakhran Wala village of district Firozepur in Punjab. He is survived by his wife, Mohinder Pall Kaur, two daughters and one son.

Sepoy Jagsir Singh was a brave and sincere soldier. The nation will always remain indebted to him for the supreme sacrifice and devotion to duty, the spokesman said.

Last week, an Army Major and three soldiers were killed on the LoC due to Pakistan shelling.

On Saturday, General Rawat had flown to the forward posts in the same sector and asked the troops to remain prepared in order to counter the nefarious designs of the enemy.

Rawat also visited forward posts along the LoC where he was briefed in detail on the actions being undertaken to ensure a robust counter infiltration grid. He also interacted with the soldiers deployed on the forward posts and exhorted the troops to continue to remain vigilant and Ever Ready.

General Rawat, accompanied by the Northern Army Commander Lt Gen D Anbu, visited the White Knight Corps to review the operation preparedness and the prevailing security situation.

The Army Chief was briefed by Lt Gen Saranjeet Singh, GOC 16 Corps about the preparedness of White Knight Corps in dealing with the emerging and dynamically changing security situation and the measures taken to thwart any misadventure by the inimical forces.

Villages along the LOC have been witnessing repeated shelling by the Pakistan Army in the civilian areas and sniper attacks on the Indian soldiers.
