96,000 applications for 4,400 seats schools of excellence: Kejriwal

Affirming that education is the highest among the priorities of his government, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday informed that a total of 96,000 applications have been received for the 4,400 seats in Delhi government’s Schools of Specialized Excellence.

These schools are being set up to bring out the talent of the children in the fields of engineering, medicine, IT and artificial intelligence, Kejriwal said at the inauguration programme of Dr B R Ambedakar School of Specialized Excellence at DESU Colony, Janakpuri.

“96,000 applications have been received for admission against 4,400 seats in our Schools of Excellence while even IIT and medical courses don’t get such response,” Kejriwal said.

“There are over 30 such Schools of Specialized Excellence in Delhi and for admissions to 4,400 seats, we have received 96,000 applications,” he said.

The criterion for admission to these schools is an entrance examination which a candidate can take up after passing Class VIII.

Kejriwal said there was a need to teach IT and artificial intelligence in government schools In view of the demands of the 21st century.

He further said that in these Schools, education would be provided to the students of the Class 9, 10, 11 and 12, in which the focus will be on skilled education including medical engineering and others.

“For the very first time in the history of 75 years, Delhi’s government schools are better than private schools and Delhi’s government schools are becoming an example as a model of education for the country,” Kejriwal said.

On the occasion, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said, “We freed school land from the clutches of land mafias and ensured that world-class schools are built on public land.”

He said Dr BR Ambedkar School of Specialized Excellence will run here so that 1600 children will get better education than private schools every year.
