Three persons were killed and several others injured on Sunday evening in a targeted attack by terrorists near a temple in the Rajouri district along Line of Control (LOC) in the Jammu division.
The terror attack coincided with the New Year, a day after DGP Dilbag Singh claimed that terror incidents were on the decline in J&K.
Confirming the terrorist attack, ADGP Jammu Mukesh Singh said two armed men indiscriminately fired in the Dungri village about 7 km from the district town of Rajouri.
Army and police have rushed to the village and cordoned off the site of the terrorist attack.
Two persons died on the spot and another reportedly succumbed to his injuries in the district hospital. At least 10 others were injured in the attack. Multiple bullets were detected on body of the injured, reports said.
The ADGP said the armed assailants targeted three houses separated at a distance of around 50 metre from each other.
Search operation is on by the special operations group of police (SOG), CRPF and Army QRTs, the ADGP said.
There were unconfirmed reports of the terrorists having been trapped.
Further details are awaited.
Several political parties have criticised the attack.
Meanwhile in another incident, one civilian was injured in the Zadibal area of Srinagar where terrorists tossed a grenade at a CRPF vehicle. Security forces have launched search operation.
