Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had, in a letter in 2017, reportedly asked the Kesarbai building — which collapsed on Tuesday — to be evacuated for demolition at the earliest adding that the office “would not be responsible” in the event of a mishap.

The BMC had issued a notice asking to carry out a structural audit and submit the audit report.

The audit report had classified the building as C1, meaning that it has to be evacuated for demolition at the earliest.

At least four people are dead and 40 feared trapped as the 100-year-old Kesarbai building collapsed in the Dongri area of Maharashtra’s Mumbai on Tuesday.

Police, civic body staff and the locals are also present at the site.

Search and rescue operations are underway at the collapse site.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that as per the initial information, around 15 families are feared trapped in the collapse.

He further said that a probe will be initiated into the incident once all the details are out.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra extended his condolences to the families of the victims of the building collapse.
