Nearly a month after being denied permission to abort by the Supreme Court, a 10-year-old rape survivor delivered a girl on Thursday at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, Chandigarh. As per reports, the 2kg newborn was safe and admitted to the Intensive Care Unit. The girl was allegedly raped by her maternal uncle, who is now behind bars.
The Supreme Court had on On July 28 turned down the plea of a Delhi-based advocate, seeking permission for termination of the rape victim’s pregnancy. The apex court had said an abortion at 32-week pregnancy would be “too risky” for the girl and rejected the plea on medical grounds. Earlier, a lower court had turned down the plea on similar grounds.
The victim was subsequently admitted to GMCH-32 in Chandigarh and was under regular watch of a team of doctors. The victim delivered the baby through C-section.
