Theatre artists remember Munshi Prem Chand

Remembering Munshi Prem Chand, Shimla Federation of Theatre staged a play on the writer’s selected stories at Gaiety Theatre on Friday to mark his anniversary celebrations.

Munshi Prem Chand a well acclaimed writer was a pioneer of modern Hindi and Urdu social fiction was born on July 31, 1880. The event was organised by Shimla Federation of India along with the department of Language Art and Culture.

Having involved theatre artist from Shimla since long, this time for Vyas Rangmanch, Bilaspur theatre artist staged a play ‘Amma’ on Friday which is based on the stories Idgah and Gulli-Danda.

The play ‘Amma’ scripted by Naresh Thakur was directed by Shashi Kant.

Shimla Federation of India (SFI), vice president Taruna Mishra disclosed that the objective of staging the plays of Munshi Prem Chand, who is acclaimed as Sahitya Samrat is to establish a social connect between the literary writer and the public.

Seeking for ‘Theatre in Education’, more than six years, the Shimla Federation of India has provided a platform to associate literary as well as theatre persons, she said.

“Theatre and Literature goes hand in hand and our aim is to bring a social connect of this with the public,” she said.

“The stories of Munshi Prem Chand hold social relevance even today and the new generation needs to be provided exposure to such literary works of a great personality which is otherwise limited and finds mention in syllabus of the school as well as curriculum of higher studies,” she said.

Besides, research papers were also presented by renowned literary personalities of Shimla Sriniwas Joshi and Sudershan Vashishtha.
