Nayana Sooryan, a young filmmaker in the Malayalam movie industry, was found dead at her home in Thiruvananthapuram, police said on Monday.

The body of the 28-year-old was found in her apartment bedroom on Sunday. The police said they were waiting for the postmortem report and would be able to ascertain the exact cause of death only after that.

Nayana had been reportedly under treatment for diabetes.

According to the police, Nayana’s mother had been trying to reach her but could not connect as repeated calls to her mobile phone went unanswered. She got suspicious and informed Nayana’s friends. The friends who rushed to her apartment found the door locked and no response to repeated banging. They finally used a spare key to open the door and found her lying dead in the bedroom, said the police.

Nayana Sooryan, who had assisted several prominent directors in the past, was noticed in the industry after Crossword (2017), which she made as an independent director. She went on to do a sequel, Pakshikalude Mananam, with actors Vijay Babu and Mythili in the lead.

Prior to that, Nayana had worked as an associate director with leading filmmakers such as Kamal, Jeethu Joseph, Dr Biju besides the late Lenin Rajendran under whom she had made her debut in the industry.

Quoting sources close to her, a PTI report said Rajendran’s sudden demise last month affected Nayana. Rajendran, who suffered from liver ailments, died on 14 January this year.

Nayana, who was originally from Alappad in Kollam district, is survived by father Dinesan, mother Sheela and two siblings. She had directed several advertisements and stage shows in India and abroad.
