Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum opus Padmaavat has made its way to the Rs.150 crore club in its opening week in India despite all the ongoing controversies surrounding the film.

Padmaavat starring Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh in the lead roles had marched past the Rs.100 crore mark in its extended opening weekend since releasing on January 25.

According to trade analyst Taran Adarsh the film collected Rs.12.50 crore on January 31 taking the total collections of the film to Rs 155.50 crore.

The film, based on 16th century poet Malik Muhammad Jayasi’s poem Padmavat, was caught in a row after protests from Shri Rajput Karni Sena which contended that it distorts historical facts and dents the pride of the Rajput community.

As a result of the ensuing violence, the film did not witness a release in many states like Rajasthan, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh as well as in some theatres across Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

The film opened to strong word of mouth mainly because of the stellar performances of the star cast especially Ranveer’s portrayal of the antagonist, Sultan Alauddin Khilji.

Padmaavat is on a record breaking spree as it is rewriting records at the box office across the globe and has already entered the Rs.200 crore club worldwide.

Directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Padmaavat was released worldwide in 2D, 3D and IMAX 3D on January 25.
