Period. End of Sentence, a film on the taboos around menstruation that features the real ‘Pad Man’, Arunachalam Muruganantham, bagged the Oscar for Best Documentary Short Subject this year. The film, set in India, was principally shot in Hapur, Uttar Pradesh.
Directed by award winning Iranian-Amercian filmmaker Rayka Zehtabchi, and co-produced by Indian film producer Gunmeet Monga’s Sikhya Entertainment, the film is being proudly flaunted by Indians across the globe as a major win.
From Akshay Kumar- the ‘ reel Pad Man’ and Priyanka Chopra, to Uttar Pradesh’s CM Yogi Adityanath, this is how all of them responded to the film’s victory.

Amazing news coming in! #PeriodEndOfSentence, a film on menstruation shot in India, has won the OSCARS in the Documentary Short Subject category. Produced by Ms. @Guneetm, the film talks about how “a period should end a sentence, not a girl’s education”.https://t.co/iIy1rJUjFa

The 26 minute film is part of The Pad Project, an organisation established by a group of school students and their teacher, Melissa Berton, from Los Angeles. It follows the journey of women in Hapur and their experience in setting up a sanitary pad vending machine in the village.
