Netflix, the popular video streaming platform, has major plans for Asia expansion. It has announced 17 new originals, nine of them from India. The original films from Indian will be coming on the web platform soon.
Simran Sethi, Content Executive at Netflix, made the announcement at Sea What’s Next: Asia event on Friday.
Here are the forthcoming films on Netflix:
Rajma Chawal- The story of a father and an estranged son deals with the former reconnecting with his child in the age of social media. Set in the backdrop of Chandni Chowk in Delhi, Rajma Chawal, starring Rishi Kapoor, would explore the emotions, pain, and humor of the family.
Firebrand- Produced by Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra, and directed by Aruna Raje, this Marathi film narrates the story of a successful lawyer. Usha Jadhav plays the lead, who deals with family cases in the court and intimacy issues in her marriage at home.
15 August- The Marathi film is a satirical take on the life of a middle-class family living in a chawl. Produced by Madhuri Dixit, this original Netflix film will release in early 2019.
Music Teacher- Starring Manav Kaul, Music Teacher revolves around an unsuccessful and emotionally troubled music teacher. Things take a turn in his life when his mentee, who has become a Bollywood singer, returns to the town after eight years and his love for her reignites.
Chopsticks- Directed by Sachin Yardi, Chopsticks stars Abhay Deol, Vijay Raaz and Mithila Palkar in pivotal roles. The film revolves around a talented but shy girl who teams up with a conman to recover her stolen car from a Mumbai gangster.
Bulbul- Produced by Anushka Sharma, Bulbul is a period drama that deals with age-old beliefs and superstitions. It’s a story of a child bride who has been abandoned by her husband and is now serving the people of the village.
Upstarts- An Udai Singh Pawar directorial, Upstarts is a coinciding story of India’s startup sector and the relationship of three college mates from small towns. Money and the nature of the startup sector challenge their relationship throughout.
Cobalt Blue- Based on a popular novel by the same name, Cobalt Blue is a film that explores the events that take place after a brother and a sister fall in love with the same man.
Hotel Mumbai- Dev Patel and Armie Hammer-starrer Hotel Mumbai is based on the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. It explores the real-life story of victims and survivors of the terrorist attacks.
