Mojo Nixon, the spirited musician recognized for his quirky tunes like “Elvis Is Everywhere,” passed away at the age of 66 while aboard the Outlaw Country Cruise, where he was a familiar face as both a performer and co-host. His real name, Neill Kirby McMillan Jr., might not have been as widely known as his stage moniker, but his impact on the music scene was significant.

His family confirmed his passing due to a cardiac event, expressing their sentiments on Facebook, stating, “Mojo Nixon was full-tilt, wide-open rock hard, root hog, corner on two wheels + on fire… How you live is how you should die.” They painted a vivid picture of his final moments, describing him after “a blazing show, a raging night, closing the bar, taking no prisoners + a good breakfast with bandmates and friends.”

Born in North Carolina and later moving to Virginia, Nixon’s musical journey took him through Ohio, England, and eventually to Denver, where he kickstarted his career in a punk band called Zebra 123. His migration to San Diego led him to join forces with Country Dick Montana’s group, the Snuggle Bunnies, which marked the beginning of his rise to prominence.

Nixon’s breakthrough arrived with his 1987 album “Bo-Day-Shus!!!,” featuring the iconic track “Elvis Is Everywhere.” The song’s catchy beats and humorous lyrics caught the attention of music enthusiasts, earning Nixon a spot on “The Arsenio Hall Show,” where he captivated the audience with his energetic performance, complete with cardboard Elvis masks.

Throughout his career, Nixon’s irreverent style and satirical songs made waves, with titles like “Don Henley Must Die” and “Debbie Gibson Is Pregnant With My Two-Headed Love Child” showcasing his unique perspective on pop culture. Collaborations with notable figures like Jello Biafra further solidified his status as a trailblazer in the alternative music scene.
