Surprises a long lost friend with a sweet gesture — a greeting card, a handwritten letter or just a phone call — this Friendship Day (August 5). We should never miss an opportunity to reconnect with friends and what better day to take the initiative.
What started as a marketing gimmick by Hallmark Cards, Friendship Day is now officially recognized by the United Nations. While the UN celebrates International Friendship Day on July 30, countries like India and Pakistan observe it on the first Sunday of August.
The idea was first given in 1930 by Joyce Hall, the founder of Hallmark cards. But, it gained popularity in 1958 when Dr. Ramon Artemio Bracho had dinner with friends in Paraguay.
In 1998, the wife of the UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan named Winnie the Pooh as the world’s ambassador of friendship in the United Nations.
