British actor Staz Nair is set to step into the lead role of the upcoming BBC crime drama “Virdee,” replacing Sacha Dhawan, Deadline reports. Dhawan, known for his role in “Doctor Who,” had to bow out due to scheduling conflicts.

The series, set in Bradford, revolves around Harry Virdee, an investigator grappling with familial rejection after marrying Saima, a Muslim woman. Nair expressed his excitement about portraying the vibrant and nuanced narrative, emphasizing the themes of cultural assimilation and protecting loved ones.

The ensemble cast includes Aysha Kala as Saima Virdee, Nina Singh as Tara Virdee, and Vikash Bhai as Riaz Hyatt, among others. Notably, Hans Zimmer is on board to compose the theme music for “Virdee,” adding his signature touch to the series.

As Harry navigates personal turmoil and hunts down a serial killer targeting the Asian community, the show delves into themes of vulnerability and reconciliation. Dhawan, while stepping down, conveyed his well wishes to the team.

Nair’s recent credits include roles in Zack Snyder’s “Rebel Moon” and HBO’s “Game of Thrones.” He brings a wealth of experience to the table, having appeared in various acclaimed productions like “Supergirl” and “We Are Lady Parts.”

“Virdee” is being produced by the Magical Society’s UK division, led by producer Paul Trijbits. Adapted from AA Dhand’s novel by Dhand himself, the series is directed by Mark Tonderai.

Executive producers include Trijbits, Dhand, and Jo McClellan for the BBC. Cineflix Rights holds exclusive worldwide distribution rights for the series.

Zimmer, along with James Everingham and Shashwat Sachdev, will craft the musical landscape of “Virdee,” offering aspiring composers from Bleeding Fingers and Screen Academy Bradford a chance to contribute to the score.

With a compelling storyline and a talented team behind the scenes, “Virdee” promises to be a captivating addition to the crime thriller genre.
