The ‘Shrek’ series first charmed audiences in 2001 with its witty, unconventional take on fairy tales. The original film, based on William Steig’s 1990 picture book ‘Shrek!’, follows the grumpy green ogre as he embarks on a quest to rescue Princess Fiona in exchange for reclaiming his swamp from the meddling Lord Farquaad.
With Eddie Murphy’s Donkey providing comic relief, the film became a critical and commercial success. It earned an Oscar for Best Animated Feature. And, it paved the way for multiple sequels and spin-offs, including the popular ‘Puss in Boots’ series.
Over the years, the franchise has grossed over $2.9 billion globally, becoming one of the highest-grossing animated series in history.
