JK Rowling announces ‘open casting call’ for new ‘Harry Potter’ TV series

Renowned author JK Rowling’s magnum opus book series is now going to get a TV series. After the author created a stir with her ‘Harry Potter’ books and film adaptations, she is returning the tales to the screens, this time in a show format. For the upcoming series, Rowling has announced an open casting call, sending fans into a frenzy.

On September 11, the ‘Harry Potter’ took to X to post the announcement. The announcement poster shared on the microblogging site read, “Open casting call for children to play the roles of Harry Potter, Hermoine Granger and Ron Weasley in the upcoming HBO Original series adaptation of ‘Harry Potter.’ The team is currently considering children aged between 9 to 11 who reside in the UK or Ireland. The post also noted, “We are committed to inclusive, diverse casting. For every role, please submit qualified performers, without regard to ethnicity, disability, race, sexual orientation, gender identity, or any other basis protected by law unless otherwise specifically indicated.’

Since then, the ‘Harry Potter’ fandom has taken over the comments section, wishing the author luck. They wished Rowling luck in finding the best candidates for the roles. Nostalgic fans also expressed their love for the series and lauded the author’s skill with the pen. Expressing their excitement, one fan penned, “I hope you find the most incredibly talented and loving children who enjoy your stories! I would now like to identify as Professor Sprout or Professor McGonagall as a middle-aged woman.”

Meanwhile, a report by Variety outlined the casting details. An excerpt reads, “Please prepare a short poem or story of your choosing. It can be from your favourite book, a poem that you love, a monologue from a play or something you’ve created yourself. Please, nothing from ‘Harry Potter’. Please use your own accent. 30 seconds maximum!” the casting call says. The second self-tape is “a short video telling us a bit about yourself, including your date of birth, height and where you live. In addition, please describe any family member, friend or pet that you are particularly close to. Please use your own accent. One minute maximum.”

The submission deadline for the application is October 31. The casting call indicates that filming will take place in the UK during the next two years. Notably, the ‘Harry Potter’ TV series will be backed by Warner Bros Television and JK Rowling’s Bronte Film, as per Pedestrian. Mark Mylod will direct several episodes of the series. He also serves as the executive producer with Francesca Gardiner, as reported by Deadline.
