Kangana Ranaut’s much-anticipated period film ‘Emergency’ will finally hit the big screens on January 17, 2025, after receiving the necessary censor clearance. The film delves into the politically charged atmosphere of the 1970s Emergency period in India. It promises to bring a look at a defining moment in the nation’s history. The title was initially going to release on September 6, 2024. However, it was in troubled waters for a long time. ‘Emergency’ didn’t receive the certification initially and attracted backlash from several Sikh organisations for its portrayal of the community. Ahead of the release, Kangana Ranaut reflects on the tribulations.

For the unversed, Kangana Ranaut is not only headlining the film but she has also written and directed the title. In her recent interview with ANI, Kangana noted that the film faced heavy scrutiny, every step of the way.

She said, “Bhaut sangharsh raha. Kaafi cheezo ka saamana karna pada. (There were a lot of conflicts. We faced a lot of challenges). It was not an easy ride. It was filled with several hardships. We had to show this film to so many communities. Our film was scrutinised on every single thing. After conquering all such obstacles, we have finally reached here. We have a lot of faith in our constitution, country, and the censor board which allows us today to make our film available for the audience. We are eagerly waiting to show the film to the world.”

Continuing, she added, “I had no idea that I would endure difficult times while making this film. Usually, my films are made on a very comfortable budget but this time I faced a lot of struggles – be it related to studios or funds. The biggest struggle was that no one was confident about the film’s release. ‘Will it ever get released or not?’ This question was always there on our mind.” Previously, she also revealed that she had to sell her Mumbai property after the release faced postponement.

During the conversation, she also iterated that she wouldn’t have made ‘Emergency’ if Anupam Kher hadn’t agreed to star in it. “It was very important for me to have Anupam ji in this film. If he refused to do Emergency, then I wouldn’t have made it. Look at his on-screen personality…there’s honesty on his face. No one can portray the role of Jayaprakash Narayan except him.”
