Filmmaker Imtiaz Ali recently opened up about the resilience of the Hindi film industry despite dire predictions. In a candid interview, he revealed that he had often encountered the phrase “Bollywood nahi chalega” (Bollywood won’t survive), yet he firmly believes in the enduring spirit of cinema.
Recalling his early days in the industry, Imtiaz shared how he heard the ominous declaration numerous times. “Jab main aaya tha industry mein logo ne kaha tha, ‘Ab khatam ho gaya theatre, ab nahi chalega’ (When I entered the industry, people had said, ‘Now theatre is over, it won’t work’),” he recounted. However, he remained undeterred by such pessimism, emphasizing that the film industry has weathered similar storms in the past.
Imtiaz Ali highlighted historical instances where the demise of cinema was predicted, such as with the advent of VCR and color television. Despite these technological advancements, cinema persisted. “Cinema bandh hua nahi, kyuki hum jaise dreamers hai jo dekhte bhi hai and banate bhi hai (Cinema didn’t shut down because dreamers like us both watch and create films),” he affirmed.
His words echo a sentiment shared by many in the industry who refuse to accept defeat in the face of challenges. Imtiaz emphasized the crucial role of dreamers and creators in sustaining the art form, suggesting that as long as there are individuals passionate about cinema, it will continue to thrive.
The filmmaker’s optimism comes at a time when Bollywood is experiencing a resurgence, with audiences eagerly returning to theaters to experience the magic of the big screen. Despite uncertainties and obstacles, Imtiaz remains steadfast in his belief that cinema, fueled by the dreams of its creators, will endure.
In essence, Imtiaz Ali’s message is clear: despite the naysayers, Bollywood will persevere because of the indomitable spirit of those who dare to dream.
