After Sonam Kapoor in Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga, another Bollywood actor is set to experiment with heteronormativity.
Ayushmann Khurrana, who is known for doing films on offbeat subjects, will return with a sequel to his own film, Shubh Mangal Saavdhan, titled Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan — a gay love story.
Anand L Rai’s highly successful 2017 film Shubh Mangal Saavdhan addressed the subject of erectile dysfunction with humour. The second installment of the franchise will delve upon the issue of homosexuality.
In a statement, Ayushmann shared his excitement for the film. “It is a beautiful story told in the quintessential Aanand L. Rai style of filmmaking that will touch your hearts and leave a smile on your face,” he added that the “out and out entertaining film” will handle the subject of homosexuality sensitively.
Other details are not known, and casting is still under way. The project will be helmed by Hitesh Kewalya, and the film is expected to release early next year with shoot beginning in August this year.
According to producer Rai of Colour Yellow Productions, the success of Shubh Mangal Saavdhan encouraged the makers to turn it into a franchise which tackles subjects in a light-hearted manner.
“With …Zyada Saavdhan, we have a great story in hand and who better, but Ayushmann to play the lead since he brings a whole new level of expression to the table. Hope audiences enjoy it as much as the first film,” he added.
Ayushmann will also be seen in upcoming films Bala and Dream Girl. In Bala, the actor will play a small-town guy who is dealing with premature balding. It also stars Bhumi Pednekar and Yami Gautam.
Bala will be directed by Amar Kaushik of Stree fame.
