The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) authorities on Tuesday dismissed all allegations levelled by the university’s student body that the university was trying to impose Hindi as a mandatory subject on some of its undergraduate programmes beginning from the 2019-20 academic year.

The university, in a statement, denied all such reports and said that it is just “misinformation” that has been circulated in the media by some students.

“It is unfortunate that some students have been spreading misinformation in the media claiming that the JNU administration has decided to impose Hindi as a compulsory subject in the undergraduate programmes of the university. Such irresponsible statements are undesirable and condemnable. We would like to state it categorically that JNU has not taken any such decision,” said Pramod Kumar, JNU registrar, in a statement.

The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union (JNUSU) had on Monday alleged that the JNU administration was trying to impose Hindi as a compulsory subject on the undergraduate BA and B-Tech courses.

“The university had recently conducted a workshop to discuss various issues related to the Draft National Education Policy. Therefore, the discussion on this issue in the Academic Council has been deferred. It is underlined that JNU has not taken any decision to impose Hindi in the curricula of its undergraduate programmes,” stated Pramod Kumar.

After the release of the statement by the university authorities in this regard, the JNUSU expressed satisfaction by saying, “This is a victory of our efforts but at the same time we need to be constantly vigilant against any anti-student policies of the university”.
