Women and child helpline receives over 22,000 complaints

Over 22,000 complaints have been received on women and child helpline in Chandigarh in past 18 months.

As per the date with the helpline run by the Social Welfare Department, 22,303 complaints were received between October 2015 and March 2017.

The calls were mostly received from colonies and villages in Chandigarh's periphery including Mauli Jagran colony, Bapu Dham, Dhanas new migrant colony, Bhaskar colony sector-25, Ram Darbar, Burail, Kajeri, Hallomajra, Dadumajra and Sanjay colony,

Most of the complaints are related to domestic violence, harassment, sexual assault, family and marital dispute.

Department manager Vikramjit Godwani told The Statesman: “If extreme cases, we refer the complainants to Nari Niketan, Savera, Snehalaya and State legal Authorities(SLSA) depending upon the case requirement.”

Around 313 cases were referred to the above institutions and 179 daily diary report (DDR) along with 10 FIR were filed till March 2017.

The helpline also gets calls from senior citizens facing harassment by their own son or daughter-in-law or property disputes.“In a day, we get five to 10 cases concerning these issues,” Sonal ,senior supervisor.
