The West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education (WBCHSE) has asked the state election commission to relieve the head examiners and examiners from election duty.

This comes in the backdrop of several government school teachers who have been deputed in Panchayat election duty demanded they be relieved as it will hamper their ongoing assignment of correcting HS scripts. For the upcoming Panchayat polls, large number of government employees have been deputed by SEC for poll duties.

The number of teachers appointed to check answer scripts is about 35-40,000 for the Higher Secondary examination. Moreover, a section of them about 25,000 have to correct both HS and Madhyamik papers.

Several government teachers had objected to the shuffling between election duty and correcting answer scripts of important board exams especially since they will have to also attend a training prior to their election duty on 14 April.

The scripts have to be corrected within 21 days by the examiners after receiving them, as per norm. The answer scripts of HS have to be corrected latest by 14 May.

Council president Mahua Das said, “We want to ensure that the examiners give their full attention in scripts correction as we want to take out the results early. It would be cumbersome for the examiners to carry out their election duties along with correcting papers.”
